ABOUT

Cheryl Maloney

CPA, CMA, CEA

I am the founder and primary advisor for Maloney Certified Executor Advisors.  I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce and later completed my Certified Management Accounting designation in 1997.

A couple of years ago, I became acutely aware of the importance of the Executor role in administering an estate.

I was motivated to get my Certified Executor Advisor designation for my own personal knowledge. Through this process, I have come to the realization that most Canadians are not equipped to succeed in this role.

It has become my mission to help Executors mitigate their risks and streamline the process so they can confidently perform their duties.
As a Certified Executor Advisor, my goal is to set future Executors up for success by providing them with a roadmap for their obligations, as well as working with the Testator to make sure his/her wishes are understood.

My Story

Everybody has their own story. Each journey is unique. My path to becoming a Certified Executor Advisor is my own.

In 2016, a family scare with my Mom crystallized for me the importance of preparedness when it comes to the future for your parents. All too often we either assume our parents are going to live forever or they/you have everything in order when you need to step in. However, this is not the case and it got me thinking that "I am not alone." There are probably thousands and thousands of well-intentioned yet unprepared families out there that have a profound need to get their affairs in order.

So I am now on a mission. I completed my Certified Executor Advisor (CEA) designation to go along with my CPA and CMA designations. This is my calling. I specialize in helping families, primarily future Executors, establish the plans to successfully administer the estate. I have been a CMA since 1997 working both corporately and as an independent entrepreneur. I have always enjoyed numbers and adhering to processes, but I also like working with people. I value deep conversations and finding out what is important to people. This process allows me to connect with my clients emotionally while providing them with a process and the tools necessary to reduce the risk, minimize the time and optimize the experience of settling an estate.

What does success look like?

*    Families communicating and not fighting.
*    Beneficiaries receiving inheritances quickly and efficiently.
*    Executors not ending up in court and/or facing financial penalties.
*    Parents having their plans fulfilled according their wishes.

When settling an estate goes poorly, Executors get sued and families get torn apart. Unfortunately, these wounds never heal because the only person who can provide clarity and reconcile the issue has passed away.  It doesn't have to be like this. By working together, I help facilitate open communication between the future Executor and their family members to ensure wishes are known and understood ahead of time thus providing a smooth transition as the Executor commences their role.

I am Cheryl’s associate and I have been in the financial services industry for over 30 years. I graduated from the University of Toronto with an Economics degree in 1989 and joined Canada Life Assurance Company in a full-time position immediately after my graduation.

Fast forward all these years and now I have an extensive background in product development and marketing on both sides of the border. Most recently, I have spent most of my time educating advisors and their clients on the important role of Executors in estate planning.

Having a successful estate transition is dependent on the performance of the Executor. Without their success, estates face undue delays, asset erosion and legal challenges.

It has become my mission to share my knowledge with advisors and help them reach their clients with this story. Not only will it provide value to clients and their families, it will help an advisor grow their practice through consolidation of assets, inter-generational planning and increased referrals.
